The AU • Sunset Sidewalk Card Set

Look down at the sidewalks of the Outer Sunset neighborhood in San Francisco. Julie Cloutier became obsessed and hyper-aware of their patterns and playfulness. For years, she documented their inconsistencies and cracks, the unusual and handmade oddities, and turned that love into a photographic catalog. Sunset Sidewalks aims to expose the beauty in the mundane—perfections and imperfections that go unnoticed right underneath our feet.

This series of cards is a collaboration between Julie's sidewalk image collection and The Aesthetic Union's letterpress translation of patterns into printed lines.

The Aesthetic Union, established in 2013, is a contemporary letterpress studio, workshop space, and print shop based in the Mission District of San Francisco. Located at 555 Alabama Street in the Heath Ceramics building, it offers both handcrafted stationery and paper goods — greeting cards, art prints, stickers — and custom letterpress printing. More than a retail shop, it's a creative hub: people can take workshops, rent studio space and presses, observe the vintage machinery in action, and collaborate with resident artists. The Aesthetic Union strives to preserve the craft of letterpress in a digital age, combining aesthetics, texture, and hands‑on artistic expression.
